The Drum Circle

The Drum Circle logoThe Drum Circle is a place where participants come to learn and share. It allows children to be heard and adults to let loose. This hands-on, interactive workshop will have its participants grooving along to the beat that has always been central to the African-American experience while providing the opportunity to learn about the vast world of drums and percussion instruments. The Drum Circle offers a great opportunity to learn about and appreciate how the drum has spread from Africa throughout the world, its power as tool for communication, and its role in ceremonies. The Drum Circle opens up the world of "The Beat" to anyone who joins.

 

Includes:

1. Concepts of rhythm, meter, tempo, and beat
2. Understanding of Call and Response technique in drumming
3. Exploration of the origin and history of various types of drums including the Djembe, Dumbek, Conga, and various other percussion instruments such as the Cabasa, Maracas, Shekere, Claves, and more.
4. Playing techniques of each instrument
5. Opportunities for participants to create poly-rhythmic patterns as a group.

 

Group Options:

This workshop can be tailored to groups of any size and all grade levels.

 

Achievement:

 Historical and technical knowledge of percussion instruments from various cultures within the African Diaspora. This workshop satisfies Items 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 9 of the National Standards for Music Education set by the National Association of Music Education.
