Hip-hop Jazz Musicology

Hip-hop Jazz Musicology LogoHip-Hop Jazz Musicology is CODA Program's signature workshop that teaches participants about the social, historical, and musical influences on Hip-hop and how it relates to other genres within African-American traditions. Excellent for students, teachers, and parents, Hip-hop Jazz Musicology creates a forum to bridge our collective understanding of how Hip-hop relates to its predecessors. Each participant contributes to the workshop and is able to walk away enjoying a deeper connection to the story, music, and history that is the African-American experience. The workshop has been shared in museums, libraries, and classrooms throughout the region for over four years.

 

Includes:

1. Discussion and role-play exploring the various genres of African-American music, starting with "Call and Response", ring shouts, and rhythm.
2. Exploration of Spirituals, Blues, Blue Notes, Gospel, Jazz, Scatting, Swing, Rhythm and Blues, Beatboxing, Improvisation, and Hip-hop Music.
3. Analysis of binding elements of the various forms of African-American music
4. Original Hip-hop Jazz Musicology exercises drawing on the knowledge shared during the workshop.

 

Group Options:

This workshop can be tailored to age groups of any size ranging from Grades 3-12.

 

Achievement:

Students will gain an appreciation for the experience and culture of African-Americans, and explore how this experience continues to influence the development of music, particularly Hip-hop music. This workshop satisfies items 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9 of the National Standards for Music Education set by the National Association of Music Education.
